Inter-company restaurant

Open up on water and light

FRANCE - Saran

This development occupies a parkland site facing a tree-lined lake located in Saran. The original building located in Saran had a traditional pitched roof covering a low volume. The entire load-bearing structure had been hidden by low false-ceilings and a centrally sited kitchen in need of modernization.

The brief was to enlarge and reorganize the restaurant and make the most of the lakeside view. AIM Hanemian Architects’ solution was to clear all the front part of the building by moving the entire kitchen service to the rear, taking down the false ceilings to gain internal height and making a feature of the load-bearing timber frame. The kitchen gained by being closer to the delivery area.

In order to improve the natural lighting in the heart of the building, while avoiding adverse sunlight effects which might have resulted from a glass roof, AIM Hanemian Architects extended the front slope to create a vertical shed pitch, introducing light without glare. Thanks to the asymmetrical solution, the roof covers the extensions, and the redesigned front elevation, facing the lake, thus becomes the attractive design feature that the client hoped for.
